blank screen after configurating the monitor

Hi everyone,
I have a gateway laptop with a widescreen monitor(1280x 800).
At the beginning, Kubuntu have automatically choose a resolution for my monitor (1024 x 768). But I am not agree with this resolution.
So I try to find the most suitable monitor driver that providing the widecreen resolution so that I can get the best display.
After choosing a new one that seems to satisfy my requirement, I restarted my laptop. BOOM !!! I only can see a black screen when it started Kubuntu.
Anybody can help me
Do I need to reinstall Kubuntu from scratch ? Or can I use some commands in recover mode to change the resolution to the other one

"sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", selecting the proper graphics driver and your resolutions.

But I wonder why I can't set a widescreen display resolution for my 15.4 inches laptop Is there anyone done that before
Can you share with me your experiences ?

What is the graphics chip in your laptop?

I got good results using xserver-xorg-video-intel, on a new e-machines PC. The other driver (i810) wouldn't provide 1400x900 resolution.
