    Computer Will Not Power Down

About fifty percent of the time that I restart or turn off my computer from within Kubuntu, it doesn't work. Once KDE is terminated, the monitor will shut off and act as if it is disconnected, and the computer will merely buzz its fans into eternity - or until I press the reset button or hold down the power button. The other half of the time it does work right, showing the Kubuntu unloading screen and cutting the power and everything. Interestingly enough, when I hibernate, it almost always works. And shutting down works every time that I try it in Windows (dual-boot). This isn't a huge problem, but it is a little annoying. Anyone got any ideas?

The fact that it works after hibernation makes me think it is related to "power management", which seems to be a source of a number of issues that folks have with their hardware and (K)Ubuntu. I don't know if fiddling with the ACPI daemon/switch will make any difference -- you could try it.

Alright. How would I do that?

Try adding "acpi=force" to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst (or just put it in when booting).
        For external use only.

Alright, thanks. I'll let you know whether it works, after I restart a few times.
