I have a bizarre situation with my microphone and i was wondering if anybody could help. I plug my microphone in and i can hear myself through the speakers but no program i have run is picking me up which is annoying. I've tried turning my microphone up but that just makes me louder and the programs still don't pick me up.

In KMix, under the Input tab, make sure the green light is out and the red light is lit for the Microphone line.
If that doesn't work, try the same in alsamixer (you may have to install):- Use the right-arrow until Mic is selected in [Playback], and press M to make sure the box at the bottom of the meter says MM
- Press Tab to go to [Capture]
- Press Space under Mic to make sure it's selected for input (it goes red with CAPTUR above it)

I have been having a problem with my usb mic with Skype since I installed Feisty.
I made sure settings were right using alsamixer as you suggested and it works...
