How to get packages from software installer

I'm new to Kubuntu, running 7.04. I need to know how to add packages so I can install the 915resolution package and setup my laptop to use this for 1200x800 resolution. Other distros I've used like (PCLinuxOS and Mepis) automatically recognize and install 915resolution so that the 1200x800 works after display manager restart.

Also, what packages do I need to install to run DVD's, that is, play movies?

As soon as a Isent this I found out how. I'm adding 915resolution and will play with that. Now I need to figure out all the packages needed to play movies.
