    Nvidia GeForce FX5200...

I have an interesting problem, and I am not entirely sure what is causing it.

My system... Abit KV7 mobo with a mobile athlon, 1 GB of RAM, 80 GB HDD (Master), 40 GB (Slave), and a PNY GeForce FX5200... I have been able to get the nvidia drivers installed and seem to run ok for a bit, but that is when I run into issues...

My system will randomly crash to a black screen with white smiley faces on it, and it is completely locked up, I can not switch to any terminals or anything. I have two of these FX5200's and get the same random crashes on each...

Anyone have any idea what this problem could be? Another odd thing is before I installed the nvidia Linux drivers every now and then my screen would flash to black and show the video card bios information like it was just booting up but then take me right back into X a couple seconds later like nothing was wrong... Could this be an AGP issue?

    Thanks in advance...

It certainly sounds like the problem(s) would be in the hardware side of the world. Have you ever run another OS on that platform -- how did it do? Have you opened the KSysGuard monitor and observed the CPU and memory utilization, to see if there is a degradation that happens over a period of time? Are there any cute "memory-mapping/sharing/shadowing" things going on that can be turned off in BIOS? That business about suddenly seeing the video BIOS really sounds like a bad connection or an intermittent "open" -- how solid is your power supply? Do you have another power supply that you could swap in, just to test that possibility?

That's all I can think of in 15 seconds .....

      dibl,

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm wondering if there is an issue with the motherboards agp port... I wouldn't be surprised at all... But as to the power supply side, that should be in good order for what is running in the box, I believe it is an Antec 350w (I do have a couple 450w's hanging out that I can test the psu with, I'll try that when I get home tonight.

Those FX5200 cards were my primary cards 2-2.5 years ago and worked great in Windows... But who knows maybe they are just showing their age...

I'll check out KSysGuard tonight and see if there is anything apparent when the crash happens. But I can say that this occured in a previous Ubuntu (6.10) and the Kubuntu version as well... So I don't think it's a software issue, unless its in the way I am setting up the drivers...

I don't think it's software either, and I'm skeptical that it is directly related to your AGP slot or controller. I would first rule out that Antec PSU, by substituting one of the others. I know it's a pain, but it's funny what a cold solder joint in a PSU will cause ....

Well after completely re-installing feisty again (previous install blew up after crashing during a package update) I am still having the same issue. I have swapped the psu out with a definite known good one so I don't think that was the issue, unless the mobo has a bad solder some where... But right after booting into X after re-installing I started seeing the video card bios show up again while I was messing around in X... It's almost like the cards are just randomly re-initializing themselves... Anyway to see if getting the nvidia drivers installed correctly would fix my issue, I setup Envy and installed the drivers and X picked them up correctly, but whenever it flashes to the video bios screen now instead of going back into X it freezes on the black screen with white smilies all over it... Not sure what the root cause of this is but its darn annoying! =)

I ordered a new mobo today so hopefully that will fix this issue if not then at least I'll have ruled that out and trash the two video cards! =)

          Thanks again for your help

I actually have the FX5200 in my Dell Dimension 8300. I've never had that problem with it at all and I would proably guess it is the Display Card itself. Have you tried "re-seating" the card?
