Re: dual screen with nvidia fx 5500

System Settings > Monitor & Display > Administrator Mode > Hardware. Set up the second head, then set the screen configuration (first tab).
    For external use only.

when i try to edit xorg.conf, that what i get:
kded: cannot connect to X server :0.0
DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-5799' to 'kded'
kded: ERROR: Communication problem with kded, it probably crashed.

anyway, i need to set the resulation in both my screens and i cant open the "monitor and display".
and i dont know how to edit xorg.conf. what can i do to get "monitor and display again"?
        this is my xorg.conf:

Re: dual screen with nvidia fx 5500

I don't know why you would be getting that error message -- I'm nearly as new to this as you are -- but I'd recommend using nano to edit your xorg.conf (or any other text file), like so:
            Code:
            cd /etc/X11
            sudo nano xorg.conf
That said, I had lots of trouble getting my display set up properly until I installed the actual proprietary nvidia drivers. Look for nvidia-glx (I think that's right) in adept.

i'he no choise but to reinstall kubuntu, and i really wants to know how to install this driver and get dual screen without reinstalling again. please help.

                  Yikes, sorry to hear that.

There's a program called envy that you can find here. That's what I used to get the right driver installed; maybe you'll have better luck with that.

did that - got the same result.

i guess kubuntu isnt ready yet for nvidia fx 5500.
                    i'll look for better dist.
                    Good luck for u all

Re: dual screen with nvidia fx 5500

I have a geforce 5200, and can get it to work on dual screen, but ONLY if I install the nvidia drivers and set it for twinview mode (NOT xinerama, which is what causes the settings for monitors to crash!)

If you're still getting just the blank screen when you log in, try going to the command prompt login by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1. Log in, then type "tail /var/log/Xorg.0.log > error.log"

Then paste the contents of error.log here. My guess is it's a conflict with the nvidia drivers that come with Kubuntu. I had to remove the package for them in the 7.04 beta before I could get the real video driver to work. But I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the package off the top of my head... Anyway, the error will tell us if that's the case.

Re: dual screen with nvidia fx 5500

I have an FX 5500 running on my nix box. Only one monitor normally. However, to experiment for you I plugged in another monitor.

It set up flawlessly, first time. I am using the driver that Automatix setup/installed for me. I DID have to tell it what model of monitor I had to get the freqs right. If Kubuntu thinks your LCD is a CRT it will try to 'drive' it wrong, please setup the monitor in 'computer settings'.

To get your KDE back. Boot to the prompt, log in as your user, then as su. goto the /etc/X11/ directory, and copy a backup file; nano makes one, back to xorg.conf and that should bring back X.

well, i succeed to bring the 'system settings' back.
i redefine my screens and still - nothing. every time i check V on the dual screen option and restart x-server i get the blanc screen.
my both screens are define as they should and i don't know what to do next...

If the monitor goes from standby to active; amber LED to green LED, then your freqs are wrong. Please setup the LCD; or one that does not work, to 'generic 1024x768'. Now, ENSURE it is 'generic LCD' because LCD and CRT's are listed different.
