A semi-educated guess -- you need to install the linux-headers package for your kernel, and try again with Envy. Paste this into your console:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
Then run Envy again, and let us know if it works.

How do I run Envy without X? I used to be familiar with Linux, running Mandrake 7-9, but I'm very CLI-rusty. Plus, I seem to recall Adept updating the linux-headers package for my kernel. Finally, and this real kl00less noob stuff I know, do I replace 'uname-r' with my kernel's name, or type as is?

I hear you, about the GUI thing -- I'm far from a master of the bash shell myself. No matter how broken the Nvidia or ATI drivers may be, you can always get back to a functional GUI with the following routine:

        1.
        Code:
        sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
        2. On the first screen, answer "no" to auto-detecting
        3. On the second screen, choose "VESA"
        4. When you get to the monitor section of the script, pick one resolution that you can live with for awhile, like 1280x1024 or 1024x768, and the refresh range appropriate for your LCD or CRT.
        5. When the script dumps you back to the CLI, give it
        Code:
        startx
and you should have a reasonable GUI in which to run your browser, install/remove packages, download Envy, or whatever you need to do to get your proprietary driver installed and working.

        8)

EDIT: Envy runs in text mode -- just
        Code:
        sudo envy -t

Great stuff! Since it's one in the morning here, I'll just say thanks, and repeat my question aout the "uname r" thing, if I may, before heading off to bed.

            Ooops -- sorry Max.

`uname -r` is the pseudonym for your installed kernel, if you don't happen to remember the exact kernel designation. In other words, your system will read `uname -r` as "2.6.20-16-generic", or whatever your kernel actually is, and then it will use that to install the correct linux-headers package.

I hope that's sort of clear.

              Steady hands you have.

Anyway, it's saying that the kernel module won't fit the running kernel.
Go into Adept (or whatever) and remove all nvidia-kernel packages and the nvidia-glx-new package.
Reconfigure X and select the VESA driver if you want a GUI. Otherwise, just reboot and run Envy. It should install all the packages you need.

I thought Envy cleaned up things like this, but I guess not...

Well, it clearly didn't do so for me.

Yeah, not a bad photo for someone whose cerebral palsy normally makes every photo look like it was taken in the middle of an 8 on the Richter.

To get clearer pictures, you might want to decrease the amount of time the shutter spends open (assuming your camera can do that). As this'll probably make it darker, you could try increasing the brightness.

Anyway, I just realized this is the second page of the thread... time to increase the number of messages per thread.
Or not, seems it doesn't support it.

But on the matter at hand. Are you still having trouble?

I got my GUI back, but when I tried 'uname -r', I got told off:

The plot thickens. I noted the kernel name at boot up, 2.6.20-16-generic, and replaced 'uname -r' with that specific kernel, when trying "sudo apt-get install" only to be told that 2.6.20-16 is already the latest version, and so apt-get took no action. What now?

I've just had a look at my /etc/x11/xorg.conf and and wondering how the section on Wacom got in there. Any ideas?

Not sure if you're putting in the right command. If it's the kernel headers you need, linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic is the package you want.

On the wacom sections, someone decided to add those by default. Feel free to delete the three device sections, but remember to also remove the three lines from the "ServerLayout" section below it (stylus, cursor, and eraser).

On the wacom sections, someone decided to add those by default. Feel free to delete the three device sections, but remember to also remove the three lines from the "ServerLayout" section below it (stylus, cursor, and eraser).
Thanks. On the headers, I was dvised in an earlier post to try updating them with sudo apt-get install linux-headers-'uname -r' When I tried that, it said I had to specify which kernel, so I tried sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic and got "linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic is already the latest version." So that approach did not work, unfortunately. I'm still stuck in vesa.
