    SATA DVD rewriter problems

I've upgraded to Feisty now and am still having no luck in getting DVD's to play with my SATA DVD drive. It's a Lite-On SH-16A7S and it's still working fine in windows and I can play the same DVD's in Kubuntu using my other IDE DVD drive so I know the DVD's and drive are both fine. When I attempt to play a DVD with Kaffeine i get:

"The Source cannot be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (///dev/scd0)"

There a lots of errors in dmesg
    Code:

    Re: SATA DVD rewriter problems

Does it do this with any DVD, or just that one?
Also, post the contents of /etc/fstab.

      Re: SATA DVD rewriter problems

It won't play any dvd's at all. I can read and copy files of cd-r and dvd-r with no problems. If I try and copy any files off a movie DVD I get an error telling me it could not read the file. Also when I insert a DVD movie the drive mounts and the icon appears on the desktop ok. My fstab is

      Code:
      # /etc/fstab: static file system information.

        "/dev/sr0" That's supposed to be dev/scd0 I daresay.

          Re: SATA DVD rewriter problems

Hm... I'd guess it's a problem with playback, but the error seems to say otherwise.
Try updating your package lists and upgrading your packages. If ti still doesn't work, try installing packages like libdvd, or search in your preferred package manager for dvd and install anything you think might be necessary (I only have two packages from that list installed, and I think DVD playback works fine).

During writing, UnicornRider posted on /dev/sr0--though the device is /dev/scd0, /dev/sr0 is a symlink to it. Change it if you want to, it shouldn't make any difference either way.

I have libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, libdvdplay0, libdvdread3, lsdvd, dvd+rw-tools and dvd author installed. Everything is fully updated and upgraded. Wouldn't a problem with packages mean my IDE drive wouldn't play dvd's either? I'm gonna try knoppix or puppy and see if they have the same problems.

You're right about the sr0, it is a symlink to scd0.

              Maybe. I'm not sure.
Try checking Kaffeine's console output (I think you can do that without running it from a console) to see if it says anything else.
I was about to say to check dmesg, but you already did...
Anyway, most of those errors I see all the time, but with no adverse effects. I'd put it down to the new ATA library.

I had a go with Puppy, Knoppix and Sabayon and all three give the same error. >
It's strange, if I try and copy files off the DVD movie disk using konqueror anything under about 100Kb will copy OK. Anything larger just won't copy.

                Kaffeine output is:

libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1.1.4 from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open ///dev/scd0 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open ///dev/scd0 for reading
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD

                  Re: SATA DVD rewriter problems

I'd guess there's something up with permissions.
Post "ls -l /dev/scd0" and make sure you are a member of the "cdrom" group.

                    Re: SATA DVD rewriter problems

                    ls -l /dev/scd0 gives:
                    brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 2007-05-06 12:46 /dev/scd0

and for my ide drive (which works)
                    ls - /dev/hdd gives:
                    brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 22, 64 2007-05-06 12:46 /dev/hdd

I've checked and I have cdrom in my permissions.

I did a bit of research on the net yesterday and usually this error message seems to come down to:
                    1. Missing libdvd packages
                    2. No permissions for cdrom
                    3. not specifying /dev/scd0 in mplayer/ kaffeine media settings.

I've checked all the above and everything seems ok.

I've tried running kaffeine as root to see if that will work but I get an error message saying

"Loading of player part 'XinePart' failed" and in the details "Failed to connect to X-Server!"

                    is that normal?

                      Re: SATA DVD rewriter problems

Yeah, for KDE apps, you always want to run it through kdesu, rather than sudo. In this case, I'm guessing you were in a root shell (i.e. sudo -s), in which case applications won't run at all (root isn't running an X server to connect to).

On the DVD problems, I'm not sure how to proceed. Try going into your preferred package manager and checking for packages you might need. (Try a search like "dvd" or "libdvd".)

                        Re: SATA DVD rewriter problems

I was running it using the command kdesu kaffeine from the kmenu when it was giving the "Failed to connect to X-Server!" message. If I try and run it from the shell using sudo then kaffeine won't even start.
I'll have another look at my packages for libdvd stuff but I'm pretty sure everything is installed. I'm not really sure what to try next either but thanks for all the suggestions so far.

                          Really? Interesting...
You might want to (and this is a shot in the dark, but these things have a way of fixing things) try reinstalling such things as sudo or kdesu.
