    No sound with Realtek soundcard

My sound card is Realtek. In Windows XP it says "Realtek ALC260 audio driver"

I tried the drivers from: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20Codecs

But actally i don't know which version is correct, so I tried EVERY one. But still no one ever worked.

    Here is what i did:
    1. download the driver to Desktop, extract it there.
    2. in a Konsole: "cd" to that file, and then "sudo ./install"
    3. after a lot of "checking...." "make ...." lines , it finally said that ( Here are the last 4 lines i copied from the konsole: )

"configure: error: Sufficiently new version of libasound not found.
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
    Remove Folder.....
    ./install: 102: alsaconf: not found"

Why and How do i solve this NO-SOUND problem

Well, I guess you need to upgrade asound and install alsaconf.
    For external use only.

Re: No sound with Realtek soundcard

      But how
      how to install alsaconf

in the realtek driver packages, there are alsa drivers , so i think maybe they should be installed
      automatically. But they didn't!

        Try "sudo apt-get install alsa-tools".
        For external use only.

Well, if you've made sure asound is the latest version, try it again.

Re: No sound with Realtek soundcard

              No, it still doesn't work.

i checked KMix - Hardware Information, it says:
              "Sound drivers supported: ALSA +OSS
Sound drivers used : ALSA "

So i think i don't have to install any new drivers since my Kubuntu is so intelligent that it may automatically install everything for me....

But.. i really don't know what the problem is?

Re: No sound with Realtek soundcard

Checking the page you mentioned, it shows Linux drivers for kernels 2.2.12 and 2.4, but the kernel you're running is probably 2.6.
So, unless you can find drivers elsewhere (and there don't appear to be any in the repositories), then I'm afraid you aren't going the be able to have any sound with that card.

Re: No sound with Realtek soundcard

So, you mean that... there is no card driver for me just because my Kubuntu is too new?

                    This is unbelievable. ..unacceptable...

Re: No sound with Realtek soundcard

                      is there any solution

i just formated C: today, which means i don't have windows any more.
So i really don't want to install XP again....

i thought new kernels should be compatible with old drivers

Re: No sound with Realtek soundcard

It's not compatible mainly because they just don't have a driver out for 2.6 kernels.

New kernels don't take old drivers because the module has to match the kernel, otherwise it won't work. It's like taking parts from a Hummer engine and trying to put them in a Mini Cooper engine. It just won't work, you need new parts.

I guess the only solution from here is to buy a new sound card.

Re: No sound with Realtek soundcard

There is another error that may be the reason.

when i started "System Settings" ->"Sound System"
                          it says:

"The specified library arts could not be found.
                          The diagnostics is:
libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory .
                          Possible reasons :
An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module.
You have old third party lying around. "

Here are what i installed via Adept Manager:
                          asoundconf-gtk
                          libsound2
                          libsound2-dev
                          libsound2-doc
                          libsound2-plugins

                          Any ideas about this?

Try looking an Adept for "libarts", installing any of the libraries you think you need.

yes, i installed everything related to "libarts".

                              unfortunately, still no sound.....

and i think Fedora Core 5 is also based on Linux kernel 2.6.
so i downloaded the realtek driver for FC 5 and installed it. But still no sound.

my god....i really don't know what 's the problem!

and i googled "libasound.so.2 cannot open", i found someone who has met this problem, and this guy said that :
"The library /lib/libasound.so.2 is a symbolic link tio /usr/lib/oss/lib/libalsa.so.2.0.0, but this
was moved to /usr/lib/oss/libs/libalsa.so.2.0.0, (note "libs" instead of "lib"). The link wasn't
updated and applications trying to load libasound.so.2 from non-existant link would fail.
The solution is to copy /usr/lib/oss/libs/libalsa.so.2.0.0 to /usr/lib/oss/lib/libalsa.so.2.0.0 or
to update the symbolic link manually. "
However, i even don't have this "/usr/lib/oss" directory!!!
