[SOLVED] No Kmix, no sound for new user in Feisty

Here's one I haven't seen and wondered if anyone had seen this.

I set up a second partition on my HP laptop to install Feisty AMD64. The unit has Intel Core Duo 2, Intel chipset (sound, wifi, etc). The system works flawlessly with Feisty 32-bit, which I've been running since herd 3.

I installed the Feisty AMD64 final release last night, and the system, generally, is working fine. I created a user account that would share my home directory with the 32-bit version to get things set up.

This morning, I decided to create a new user account specifically for the AMD setup, so I wouldn't get things mangled up with my old home profiles and configurations.

Problem: the new user account has no sound. The Kmix tray icon appears after login with a red X logo, and when I open the Kmix window from the icon, the sound card isn't detected. When I press the laptop's volume button above the keyboard (what has always worked), I get a message saying "Kmix does not appear to be running."

I can log off that new account, log into the old account (no reboot) and the sound works fine for the old account.

I tried rebooting and logging into the new account, to see if there was some off hardware detection issue, but still no sound.

The new account was created via sudo, and the new user was added to the admin group to allow it to use sudo. I can't see any real differences between this account and the original user account.

Anyone have a clue on this one?

I'm not certain if the following will help, but it could be similar especially since it is a new user. While logged in as new user, try what is in this post.

Re: No Kmix, no sound for new user in Feisty [SOLVED]

      Moon,

Thanks for the link. I had actually looked at that earlier, but not far enough. ;-)

What didn't make sense to me was that the normal user would have no issues, but a new user would. This led me to believe that it was a permissions issue, but I didn't see anything in the /home permissions that gave me much of a clue.

However, in that link, down near the bottom, there is a "tips" section, in which one user described how a newly-created account might not be made a member of the necessary groups...such as the "audio" group.

I did a comparison, fixed the missing groups, and all appears to be working fine.

I have to keep reminding myself that the Ubuntu distros do things a bit differently with things like root and initial accounts.

Also, had i use the user management tool in System Settings vice the KDE User tool, I would have seen the discrepancies in the groups a bit more easily.

      Thanks for that nudge.

No Problem. That's what this forum is for. A lot of the links that I had in that post were real good information, that's why I put it there. It seemed to answer a lot of questions I was seeing here that had no responses.
