That is strange -- but after you give it your password, you see the big green Nvidia splash screen? It almost sounds like the VGA driver is providing better resolution than the Nvidia driver -- kind of an odd result......

Of course, someone put in a zillion hours perfecting every pixel of that Kubuntu splash for VGA display, so maybe it's not as crazy as it seems.

OK, I just did another restart to make sure and first off, I see the nvidia splash screen very briefly before the log in screen. The log in screen is pin sharp, not just the lovingly crafted kubuntu logo, but also the font in which my username is written. I then type in my password, hit return and the resolution appears to change very slightly, (lower), and the pin sharpness is lost.

I haven't tried nvidia-settings yet. Will do so now.

OK, so nvidia-settings tells me that my monitor is CRT and not the flat screen it really is. There appears to be nowhere to alter this setting - there is only automatic screen detection which changes nothing - so I suppose I'll have to edit xorg.conf.

Well, I do have a CRT and so am not familiar with what goes on with LCDs....

But, did "nvidia-settings" put up a utility/panel, with a menu? Is the second item down from the top "X Display Configuration"?. If so, click that one, and you should be able to change the monitor type, the resolution, refresh, and everything.

Hmm. Yes nvidia-settings opens a control panel but under 'X Server Display Configuration' there is no option to alter the monitor type. I can change the Meta Mode, (under 'Advanced...'), but there are only options for CRT type monitors.

Maybe I'm being very slow today. It's possible.

              Hmmmm indeed!

And it says it is the -9755 version driver?

I guess we've come to the point where your GeF 4 chip acts differently than my GeForce 7900GS -- which is a desktop PCI card. I dunno -- one would think there would be a means to change it from CRT to LCD, but I'm not the guy to know how that works ....

                Driver version is 1.0-9631.

But anyway, I think this thread has moved off the original problem so I'll poke around a bit and if I start to get headaches maybe start a different thread.

You can check it out in System Settings > Monitor & Display. See if anything looks funky.

Any alterations I make there have no immediate effect - nothing happens when I click 'Apply', but when I restart the X server I am back to square one with pin sharp graphics but slow graphics.

Poke around in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then. Something might be funky in there.
