    suddenly, can't configure my printer

Hi, all. My first post. I have enjoyed feisty herd 3 , herd 4, and herd 5. I should have stayed right there, but NOOOOOoooo ! I had to download and install the daily build from last friday. Well... now I can't get the system settings / printer setup to recognize my Epson usb printer. It's a Stylus cx5800, and with the previous install, it was recognized and installed no problem.

Now, when the install wizard starts, the USB / parallel buttond is greyed out. I tried the following: I went to add/remove programs, I removed all the printer and cups stuff, then I rebooted, then I went and re-installed the printer and cups stuff. Still, the usb/parallel button is greyed out.

I can play around at the command-line if you tell me what to type. I have learned alot from just being a member here, and reading all over this forum.
    Thank you for helping.

Re: suddenly, can't configure my printer

      Hi Elswood

I tried what you suggested, and dpkg didn't like the syntax. It suggested I reread the "help". I tried a variation, something like " dpkg --configure cupsys" and that was better. But it said that cupsys was installed and already configured.

I went back to system settings, and when I tried to add a printer, this time I see that the local/parallel/usb button is black ! I got happy, then when I got the wizard, it detected a usb port and connected printer, I was really happy. But... when I got the next screen, where you choose the printer from a list of printers, there wasn't anything there. No manufacturers at all. I lost the whole list somehow.

All I can think of, is uninstalling, then reinstalling the printer and cups stuff, from the Add/Remove Programs. What do you think ?

Re: suddenly, can't configure my printer

Hi Everybody. I solved this by just being patient, and re-installing the foomatic stuff. I didn't do this before, I thought the foomatic stuff would clash with the cups stuff. I recently deleted , then re-installed all the cups files. I stayed like that, I saw the usb/parallel buttong was black (ok). But the list of possible Epson drivers DID NOT include my particular model, and before , it did include my model.

Today, I decided I would try again to solve this, apparently I had SOME foomatic files but not all. I started Adept Manager and this time I downloaded ALL the files related to Foomatic. Well, when I tried again to add/install a printer, when I got to the part where it gave me a list of Epson models, this time my model (Stylus CX5800) was there. I chose it, did a test page, and it was beautiful. So, problem solved.
I hope this post helps someone else.

Four months later I have the same problem with the Gutsy beta. I saw lots of suggestions--edit cupsd.conf, edit the udev config--but none of them worked. A simple deinstall-reinstall of cupsys and foomatic-db did it for me.
