another kmail problem

My son sends me emails which are in the .doc windows format.(and perhaps other windows formats)
I am unable to open them with my Kubuntu comp. If I use my XP machine the email states that there is an attachment and I am able to download it.
The Kubuntu machine states that there is no attachment.(if I right click)(and there is no paperclip icon)
Is there a way to access these "window" emails with Kubuntu?

try opening the attachment with open office ...
