While your waiting for that you might try downloading from here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html

doesn't that method just install the version already in the Dapper repositories, 0.8.4? That method is how I originally installed it, and the version I have from the Dapper repository is 0.8.4.

500 Oops I gave the wrong link here it is http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
download the source and get it compiled [easy instructions found here http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/]
and here is the screenshot of the final product

Is that a photo of your system? Did you just compile and install it normally without any issues? I was searching around and found posts from folks that had problems getting it to compile in Dapper. Can you please share what you did? Thanks.

            Re: VLC 0.8.6 please?

Well after actually testing out the application here is what I have found.

Although running in Dapper it doesn't seem to work properly (I should have done it before but I mainly use mplayer and kaffiene) But the 0.8.4 version does work fine at least with the videos I tested it on.

On a pc running Edgy I found that the 0.8.6 version is in the default repositories and also seems to work fine. And I didn't bother trying 0.8.4 on that one.

So it seems you have two choices.......(Drum Roll)
            1) Either continue using 0.8.4 on Dapper since Dapper has the Long Term Support maintaining packages that are stable
            or
            2) Upgrade to Edgy so you can use the 0.8.6 version since Edgy was meant to use "bleeding edge" software and packages might not be that stable--although I haven't seen problems as of yet.

Personal Note = If you do decide to upgrade I would suggest to do a clean install.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to stick with Dapper for now.
