Adept Problem

I just upgraded to KDE 3.5.5, and thats where my problems started, first the install appeared to go well.
However Adept did hang after the install, what I mean I couldn't get it to open. I did an Apt-Get update, that showed some problems, that were fixed with a configure -a function (I think that is what it was, I just followed what Apt was telling me to do)
Then Adept worked fine. Now when I try to do a keyboard shortcut (System Settings - Regional & Accessibility - Keyboard Shortcuts - Command Shortcuts it crashes.
I have put in a bug report with KDE #140717 they are asking me to install "kdelibs-dbg, kdebase-dbg". for a Backtrace.
When I try to do that I get this msg. "There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages."
I tried a sudo apt-get update this is what I get;

Failed to fetch http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-late...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found


Not sure how to proceed, at this point.

Is what you are saying that I should uninstall 3.5.5 and go back to 3.5.4?

All I'm saying is that the update you tried (as mentioned in your original post) had to fail due to the fact that the source you attempted to receive the according packages from ceased to exist.

OK, Now I understand.
What would you suggest, should I reinstall 3.5.4, or wait for the 3.5.6 version and that should have a fix for my problem. Just read further down that 3.5.6 will not be available for dapper, is that correct.?
Also I was wondering if I am shooting my self in the foot here by using "Apt-Get" along with "Adept" should I stay with just using Adept.?

Adept is merely another (from my point of view: mediocre) graphical interface to APT ... as long as you make use of them in turns (not: in parallel), things should work rather smoothly.

I have KDE 3.5.5 running on Dapper 6.06 with no problems. Maybe you have an error in your /etc/apt/sources.list file? For instance it looks like you have a pointer to the edgy repositories rather than the dapper ones?

My sources list file is below - note that I got KDE 3.5.5 from a location other than the main Kubuntu repros, namely:

I always use aptitude instead of apt-get, this enters your install in the package manager where it is easy to find and remove.

Also you can't use apt-get while Adept is up.

Also :-D I find Synaptic to be a better package manager than Adept.

Ok that makes sense thanks "podunk", just wondering why you have two sources for KDE 3.5.5 ?
I will give it a go later, when I have time.

I did as you suggested that work just great, everything updated properly. I still have the problem mentioned in my first post, however now I can get a backtrace to the kde folks. Well see what that brings.

Also I was wondering is there a list of preferred http's that one can use for the sources.list for updating the system. In other words how did you know to use the suggestd sites.?

I didn't notice those were duplicates - thanks! I got them from somewhere on the Kubuntu wiki or this forum.

First of all, I would think that you have an old source or something mistyped somewhere in your sources.list file. Leading to the apt-get problem. Maybe if you posted your sources.list file someone would spot something?

As I said, I always use aptitude rather than apt-get, and I use synaptic rather than Adept.

When I had problems upgrading to 3.5.5 this is what I did:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

Also! :-D What K/Ubuntu considers to be a complete KDE package and what KDE considers the whole 9 yards are not the same. Open Synaptic and type
kde
in the search box and you'll be amazed at how much stuff was left out from the above update.

I clicked and installed it *all* and my machine ran like a charm and I have just tons of cool stuff.

I'll be damned - mine crashes to! Good thing I had a bunch of keybindings before I upgraded!

There is a work around

sudo kcontrol

On the left pane you'll see lots of menus to open.
Open "Regional and Accessability"
"Keyboard Shortcuts"

This will open up all the keyboard short cuts that are available by default. In that same page it says:
"Below is a list of known commands which you may assign keyboard shortcuts to. To edit, add or remove entries from this list use the KDE menu editor.

Click the link "KDE menu editor.

The editor will open.
Select which folder you want your shortcut to be in.
Click "New" at the top
Give it a name
make a comment (optional)
Enter the comand i.e. /home/your name/some folder/some program
Click the shortcut key button at the bottom- give it the keystrokes when prompted
Click Save at the top.

That helped, only now because I have used the same key to launch a different program "Firefox" the old being "Swiftfox" Firefox loads and Swiftfox tries to load also, even though there is no hot key shown for Swiftfox.
I am still awaiting a reply from KDE.
I had a closer look at "Aptitude last night, it looks very indepth to say the least, I will use it as my primary updater from now on. (lots to learn)!! Also downloaded Synaptic via Aptitude and will use that also.
Should I start a new thread regarding my "Sources.list" As you suggested I would like to tweak it so that I don't run into problems later on.
By the way what are keybindings.? Is this something I should know about.
