    how to install java

hi, im new to linux, and im having a hell of a time getting java to work with firefox. why cant it come with the firefox package i tried the crappy instructions at the java website for the non-RPM version, didnt work. i tried using installers, didnt work. firefox still wants me to install java when i try to use a java app on a webpage. does my linux have some kind of anti-java virus on it or what i dont get it. can anyone explain this to me? as if i were a 2 year old please. thanks in advance.

Pass by a site, if the bar at the top says you're missing a plugin, just install it. That should work, but it won't provide the plugin for anything else, like Konqueror or SeaMonkey, or whatever.

If that doesn't work, shouldn't there be some way to apt-get java?..

      1) Firefox is free (as in speech) - java is not!
      2) The easiest way to install java and lots of other useful stuff is to use Automatix:

You should enable multiverse repositories and then you can install jre and java plugin for firefox from adept package manager. You should install the following two packages:

        sun-java5-jre

        sun-java5-plugin

I agree with the automatix route as this will probably be the easiest way to get it right the first time and also install alot of other applications you might need or want. Here is a screenshot of the java plugin in automatix.

And this should walk you step by step on how to install it.
