X restarts when attempting graphical login for users other than root.

Recently X is restarting when I try to login as a user other than root. This occurs regardless of session type (I have both kde and xfce). Console logins work, as do root logins (I changed /etc/kdmrc to allow them), though for some reason no window decorations appear in kde, though they do in xfce.

I've been fiddling around with users a bit recently, since I wanted to change my username. So the issue's likely some kind of file ownership or permissions problem.

I don't know if this is related to my other problem, see other thread.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

OK I've traced the issue; my home partition is messed up.
