Re: how do you turn off Konqueror
hit ALT F2 and type in kcontrol
In kde control center, go to File Browsing, File Associations under known types choose text, then choose html. In the Application Preference Order move the browser you want to the top of
the list.

penguin.ch's advice should set the default www-client for thunderbird (only), and claydoh's instructions should change the global setting for X-www-browser...if you wish to troubleshoot (since it seemed not to work the first time you tried it)...check the symlink for x-www-browser in /etc/alternatives...especially that the symlink is pointing to a valid firefox executable (in other words, check that the path is correct)

Re: how do you turn off Konqueror
Always learning, didn't know Thunderbird wouldn't follow thru with that. I have been using kmail lately, I used to use thunderbird, been thinking of switching back, but I hope what was posted earlier works out.

XstatyK,
Thanks, your suggestion worked for me. Was searching for a couple of days to find a way of clicking on my Hotmail msgs alerts while in Kopete to open up in Firefox instead of Konqueror.
Someone else in this forum (or maybe it was the LinuxQuestions forum) was looking for an answer to the same question. Hope they see your post.

Re: how do you turn off Konqueror
The simplest way I know of is first close out Thunderbird. Then go into the Thunderbird prefs.js file (i.e., /home/USER/.mozilla-thunderbird/USER UNIQUE.default directory) with your choice of editor and add the following at the end of the file:
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "/usr/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "/usr/bin/firefox");
Works for me, so far!!The next brick house on the left
