    Missing Modules in Control Center

    Hi all,

I am a total linux noob (just switched from Windows barely a couple months ago). My distro is actually Ubuntu with KDE running on top (installed manually, more on this later), so I thought it's better to ask the question here. Pardon me if that's inappropriate.

I already had KDE running perfectly on Ubuntu before an incident made me do the hard work all over again. Specifically aptitude somehow thought all the KDE related packages are "not in use" and thus deserve to be "removed". In my stupidity I didn't read it carefully enough and just let it do its work. Lo and behold, 20 minutes later I was stuck with GNOME and none of my customized side panels, shortcuts plus all the programs I use. So I called up synaptic and installed KDE from there. I have added the kubuntu.org repository a long time ago so the version it downloaded is 3.5.5. Anyway, after the installation everything went generally great, except one thing: my desktop size is WAY too big. Although I could simply mouse pan it I absolutely hate the experience. I fooled around the control center but couldn't find the option to limit the desktop size to monitor resolution. Then I realized something: there is no Display module in the control center! Nope, it's not in Peripheral. And just for your information, Joystick is not there, either! How do I go about fixing this? And if you guys feel generous, could you tell me how to fix the desktop size issue, too? Thanks.

Re: Missing Modules in Control Center

Try krandrtray, it's a system tray applet to change resolution in KDE, and in my experience always sets monitor and desktop resolution equal.

And for the control center: the new 'systemsettings' doesn't have all the modules that are in the old-style kcontrol. Make sure you're using kcontrol (has the tree browser of modules on the left of the window)
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

I managed to partially fix it by reinstalling the "residual" Display module from Synaptic. It's the module from an older version of KDE but it fixed the desktop problem. Still can't find the module for joystick though. Oh well.
