    Installing from CD in Adept

How can I get Adept to pull programs from an Edubuntu CD instead of automatically going online?

Edubuntu has a few nice programs (Kino, Scribus, Blender) which would take a while to download (dial-up) so I want to pull those programs (they are .deb files) into Kubuntu from the CD.

In "Manage Repositories" it asks for a location but I haven't seen any changes when I try it and I am not sure if it is looking for a package listing file or something.

I know in the gnome version (Edubuntu) there was an option to "Add CD" to the repositories listing and it does everything it needs to automatically when you click the button (when the CD is in the drive of course).

I got the CDs at the same time (ShipIt!) and they are all ver. 6.06 LTS.

This is from APT HOWTO (http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap.../index.en.html)

    2.4 Adding a CD-ROM to the sources.list file

If you'd rather use your CD-ROM for installing packages or updating your system automatically with APT, you can put it in your sources.list. To do so, you can use the apt-cdrom program like this:

    # apt-cdrom add

Basically, if you got the LTS CD from Shipit, you can't use it as a repository. The Desktop (Live) CD cannot be used as a repository source.

Also, you don't need the Edubuntu CD to install those apps. Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu all share the same repositories. This means that whatever is in Edubuntu can be installed in Kubuntu as well. You just need to know the name of the program/package you want to install.

The only purpose of using the Edubuntu CD is to not have to download everything over a dial-up.

Re: Installing from CD in Adept

You could copy all .deb packages from the cd to the /var/cache/apt/archives/. Apt/adept/synaptic/whatever checks first ~/archives/ before it tries to download packages.

Re: Installing from CD in Adept

you didn't seem to understand what I meant.

There are two types of CD's in the Ubuntu world: Alternate Install CD and the Desktop or Live CD.

The Desktop CD allows you to test run Edubuntu, without having to change anything on your computer. Starting in Dapper (6.06 LTS), the Desktop CD also came with a very basic graphical installer. This is the CD that is distributed by Shipit.

The Alternate Install CD is the regular, text-based installer. It has more installation options than the Desktop CD, but has no GUI or no Live mode.

You cannot use the Desktop CD as a CD repository. You can only use the Alternate Install CD. The reason is that an APT repository (one that is used by apt-get, Adept, Synaptic, etc.) uses DEB (.deb) packages to install things. The Desktop CD does not contain .deb packages, only the Alternate Install CD has them. So, if you use the Desktop CD as a CD repository, there will be nothing for Adept to use.

Hope that makes it a bit clearer.

I haven't fooled around with the Alternate CDs so I keep forgetting about them. Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't have a LiveCD version of Edubuntu (Dapper) and I did find .deb files. The others (Kubuntu and Ubunut) I got are LiveCDs and I haven't looked in them to see if they have .deb files or not.
