That is a "standard error", so to speak, caused by default entries in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which are needed for Wacom devices but tend to annoy on "Wacom-less" machines ... in order to get rid of this crap, you may post your file and we / I can tell you which lines to eleminate (be very careful when experimenting on your own, for one single typo can ruin your whole day ...).

For that problem to stop, I was required to reboot, just like Windows.  >

It failed to give me the password prompt until I rebooted.

i wonder if, after you added the fix to the file, a simple command like this could have prevented your reboot:

ALT/CTL + F1 (log in as yourself, then become root: sudo bash)

/etc/init.d/kdm restart

anyway, at least you fixed your problem!
