KDE restarts when changing resolution - MATTER RESOLVED

EDIT: RESOLUTION OF THIS PROBLEM A FEW POSTS DOWN

If I try to change the screen resolution using xrandr or krandrtray, KDE restarts itself. Other applications (ePSXe) seems able to change the resolution, though not the desktop size. How can this be fixed?

I'm running KDE 3.5.2 and all packages are up to date.

On a tangentially related note, what do I change in my x config files to add 320x240 resolution?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Funny, well maybe not. I am having the same problem with a new install of ubuntu 6.06 newly updated. I can' t change the resolution to 800x600. Everytime I try, it logs out and when I log back in nothing has changed.

Bumping for support, and adding my xorg.conf, since I've heard it may relate to x 'modules'

      Code:
      # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
      #
      # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
      # values from the debconf database.
      #
      # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
      # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
      #
      # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
      # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
      # package.
      #
      # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
      # again, run the following command:
      # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

        MATTER RESOLVED

The following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf needed to be changed:

        Code:
        Section "Device"
            Identifier "Generic Video Card"
            Driver "vesa"
            BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
        EndSection
"vesa" changed to the graphics chip specific driver, in my case "sis", yours may be different.
