    How to upgrade KDE 3.5.5

    Hi everyone
    Today I first installed kubuntu 6.06 & very much excited about it, Now i wanna do few things

    1. I saw new KDE version is available. So i wanna upgrade. I dont have direct internet connection. I have to download the .deb file from cyber cafe & then install them on my pc. in this situation, how can i upgrade to newest version? I mean i visited the site

    http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-355.php

    & there were some links to download KDE. I visit http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-355 & somehow lost so many file & folders, I dont understand what i exactly need to download. I hope you will understand what i wanna say

    2. I want to install gnome. give me a demo about it ie what i exactly need to download to install gnome fully

    3. As I dont have internet connection I face problem in installing the packages. for xample
    suppose to install P, Q must be installed &
    again to install Q, P must be installed. what a contradictory! u know what i mean-- the dependency thing.

    How can I solve this problem?

    Another xample suppose I wanna install mplayer, I download all the dependencies. then put them all in a new folder now how to install? boz i am facing problem that i have described in xample 1.

    No need 2 say i am a new linux user & I really wanna learn it.

    Please help me how to solve these probllems

    Easiest part :

    I download all the dependencies. then put them all in a new folder now how to install?
    Maybe this helps:

    Hard part :
    the dependency thing.

    How can I solve this problem?
    Well - lot of hard work. When you have intenet connection apt/adept/synaptic/whatever checks depedencies. Now you have to check them one by one.

    Example:

    What gnome needs /1/ /2/
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install -s ubuntu-desktop
    apt tells:
    alacarte app-install-data-commercial at-spi bittorrent bluez-pin brltty-x11
    bug-buddy capplets-data contact-lookup-applet dbus-1-utils deskbar-applet
    desktop-file-utils ekiga eog esound evince evolution evolution-data-server
    evolution-exchange evolution-plugins evolution-webcal festival festlex-cmu
    festlex-poslex festvox-kallpc16k file-roller firefox firefox-gnome-support...
    That is when you have net.

    Now you have to go to the Ubuntu packages (http://packages.ubuntu.com/) Search: ubuntu-desktop/dapper -> Package: ubuntu-desktop (0.119)
    -> Other Packages Related to ubuntu-desktop and so on ...

    About gnome. You could download alternate ubuntu cd. And install gnome from there. Ubuntu download (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download#lts)
    Alternate install CD

    The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

    * creating pre-configured OEM systems;
    * setting up automated deployments;
    * upgrading from older installations without network access;
    * LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
    * installing GRUB to a location other than the Master Boot Record;
    * installs on systems with less than about 192MB of RAM.

        Re: How to upgrade KDE 3.5.5

        Hmm - Easy way(without net) to get 3.5.5 is upgrade to 6.10.

        From Kubuntu 6.10 - Taking You To The Edge (http://kubuntu.org/announcements/6.10-release.php)

        Kubuntu operating system. KDE version 3.5.5 is the current stable release and Kubuntu 6.10 is the first distribution to include it.
        snip

        If you have a Kubuntu 6.10 CD, put it in the drive, and run apt-cdrom from the command line. Then follow the instructions above.
        snip

        Alternate CD: The alternate CD allows you perform custom, or expert, installations of Kubuntu. It is required for setting up automated deployments, upgrading from older installations without network access,...
