    installing build-essentials

    Hi to everybody, and sorry for my non perfect english

    I have this problem:
    I just intalled Kubuntu 6.06 but I can't connect to the Net via my ethernet DSL modem. I found somewhere an article that told to use 'kdsl' to configure the connection.
    Now the program's name is 'knet', downloaded the package with WinXP (I have both installed) but when I ran './configure' it returns me:

    configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
    in some way I figured out that I'm missing the 'build-essential' package, I tried to download it but I've found only .deb packages for debian, so I can't install them!

    all other solutions I find were telling to use 'apt-get' but I can't access the internet and I can't recognize this package on the install CD

    help me please, I'm goin' mad....

    Try this:

      err, you just need the command

      pppoeconf
      to setup up a PPPoE DSL connection.

Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please
check your network and modem cables. Another reason
for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe
process which controls the modem.

            Are you sure that you are typping "build-essential".

            It seens like your adding an extra s at the end.

              I installed the package rp-pppoe-3.6.tar.gz with no problems, configured it (I hope) correctly but when I run 'pppoe-start' it goes on timeout

              another little thing
              I use .txt files made with nano to transport reports from kubuntu to winXP with an USB key, but windows can't recognize the enter command for new line, showing a square instead.
              any suggestion to solve this?

                      For most programs to compile you need some development libraries (depending on what you're trying to compile)...installing kdelibs4-dev and it's dependencies you'll get most things you need to compile for kde (including the X includes)...if you need just the X includes, I believe they are in the 'libx11-dev' package.
