help: my dapper drake is slow

    hi!

lately i've experienced slowness in my system. before it was not like this, but now it's really obvious. e.g. my applications and my startup move really slowly. what can i do to speed up things?

i'm not sure if it has to do with hardware. anyway my intel is pentium4 with freq of 1.5 GHz. i have 256 mb ram. please help me. thanks a lot!!!

Please take a look at the output of the konsole command "top" or the gui application "ksysguard". See whether any one program is taking up a large fraction of your system's resources, either in the form of memory or CPU time. If so, kill that process. If it turns out that the resource hog was an essential process and your machine goes down, you know that your machine is short on whichever resource that program was hogging. If, instead, you're machine speeds up instead of crashing, you've found your culprit. Just reduce your use of that program, if possible.

I have a desktop using p4 2.8ghz with 768mb ram. runs smoothly. I have notebook using an mobil athlon 1.4ghz with 640mb of ram. when I launch thunderbird it sucks the life out of the cpu. I have a hp office jet 720 which also sucked the life from the cpu. so I set up a headless computer I vnc into to run the printer and thunderbird and my notebook runs great now.

        I have

        Pentium III 650 MHz
        256 MB PC100 SDRAM
        10 GB HDD
        4 GB HDD

My computer is a dinosaur. Anyway, what the guys said above is true. For me the things that slow me down are firefox and sometimes akregator - I have a lot of feeds.

I also installed kbfx and that may also affect some things, I think.

Anyway, I hope somebody magically shows up and gives us a Kubuntu optimization How to - as Most stuff is for Ubuntu when I search in Google.

There was a thread on Kubuntu Optimization under Breezy, a while ago, the techniques have not changed, since then. I suggest that you see if you can find it. If not, don't despair, because most of the suggestions came from this Community Help page and the references cited on that page.

I suspect that systems with a limited amount of memory are probably spending a lot of time swapping. If you can find matching memory, an additional stick might be a big help.

            thanks for the suggestions!

what i did actually was to re-install a fresh dapper drake. my previous system was just an upgrade from breezy anyway and hence was buggy. now everything's OK.
