    Problems with keyboard "jumping" characters

Hallo! I just installed a new Kubuntu 6.06 LTS on my laptop (an Acer Aspire 1681 WLCi), without messing with any setting - just a plain install.
Strangely I've a problem: when I type something (in every application) sometimes the input "freezes" for a second or so and misses the characters I type in that time. So I end up with phrases missing some characters.
I don't know where to look, I tried to see with dmesg | tail if there's something about it but there is no sign of it.
Is this an X problem? If so, where could I look to try to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Andrea

    Andrea,

admittedly, I'm only guessing, but does the console command top tell you anything about a job going berserk (e.g. by completely occupying your system's computing power)?

No, there's no such process. Everything seems fine with top, there's no process consuming all the resources.

        Andrea,

o.k., next guess then, trying to eleminate potential sources of trouble:

        - Have you ever tried to work with an external keyboard? (Just to check things out ...)

        - Does the graphical interface behave strangely (e.g. display "trails" from cursor movement)?

If the latter one applies to your system, I would agree to your assuption regarding the X server - if this is not the case (as I dare to suspect), maybe there's something wrong in the communication between keyboard and Kubuntu ...

By the way: have you ever tried to make use of a live system (preferably based on Debian, thus a "relative" to Kubuntu) - again: not as a replacement, but in order to narrow down what could be relevant to the solution.

Hi! Thanks again for your kind answer.
I don't have any problem with the cursor, and there's no trails or similar. I've not tried a Live system, but before changing the HD I had a Ubuntu 5.10 installed, and with gnome it worked greatly. Then when I changed my hard disk I installed Kubuntu and here's the problem. On the same hd I've a windows XP pro system, and keyboard works perfectly there - I mean, no hardware problem.
I still haven't tried an external keyboard, as I don't have an usb one. I'm gonna try to find one and try it, just to see.
          Thanks again!

            Andrea,

in this case I'd assume that some part of your current version of Kubuntu doesn't behave too well ... therefore, I would suggest another two steps:

            - Boot from a "Debian style" live system (e.g. Kanotix 2006 RC 4), and if with this your keyboard works properly, save the live system's version of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf for later reference (read: to compare this one to the version Kubuntu itself makes use of).

            - Log out of your graphical desktop and log in to the console, and just hack in whatever you like ... if there nothing get's lost, I would suspect a problem in / with the graphical desktop (read: KDE); if even there typing doesn't work properly, I might be a bug of sorts in the current kernel (what would mean that you're doomed - but that's most unlikely, as I believe).

Remark: by default, the keyboard layout on the console will be set to US-american style - therefore, there's no reason to panic if the output on the screen in respect of contents won't go with your typing

We're in the dramatic section, I think!
The problem appears also in the console. I switched to the console before logging in hitting ctrl+alt+F1, and there's the problem too.
The strangest thing of all is that I updated my kubuntu to the 6.06.3 with apt-get distupgrade, now I have the latest provided kernel too (the 2.6.15-27) and also with this kernel there's this bug.
              The other one is 2.6.15-23.
Guess I'll have to download another distribution and pray the Gods.

                Andrea,

that's defintely not what I wanted to "hear"

However, I think it would be interesting to see how your laptop behaves with Simply Mepis "on board": this system is derived from Debian as well as from (K)Ubuntu - thus a close relative, so to speak ...

I wish I could have helped you on - it such a strange phenomenon
