I just got a handful of updates. I didn't even really look at them, just installed them and went on my way.
It had been a day or two since I was on this pc.
All of a sudden my firefox was eating 100% cpu, I closed it and couldn't get back into it. Thought odd, so I went to save some work, can't write to the disk. Permission denied.
Brought up a konsole and did an sudo vi newfilename and was going to paste it in there, all kinds of swap/temp file errors. It finally opened VI, but I couldn't save. Permissions were all fubar.
Logged out and tried to log back in, couldn't. Got some message about not being allowed to access kdm. So I dropped out of X completely, sudo apt-get remove kdm.
Rebooted, logged into the console, then sudo apt-get install kdm then kubuntu-desktop then kubuntu-default-settings. Then just startx, and all was well again.
Here I am posting as if nothing happened.... however my firefox toolbar icons were out of place, but nothing else is.
