Please do not use the CODE tag when pasting content that contains formatting (colored, bold, underline, italic, etc).
The CODE tag displays all content as plain text, including the formatting tags, making it difficult to read.
Using: MS Word 2002 (sp3)
OpenOffice 2.0.2
Won't open any .doc file.
No error message, OpenOffice just opens for a couple of seconds and then closes. Hope this helps.
i have no idea but if you open a konsole and execute ooffice -writer, if the applications crash you might have some more message in the console

OpenOffice won't open .doc (sharing with xp computer)
Keep answers real simple. :-)
Are you trying to access the XP docs through a network share? I remember there were problems opening remote files with openoffice, though I can't remember if there was a definitive solution (as a workaround you can try to copy the .docs to local machine and open them locally)...at least that way you can test whether the problem is openoffice not being able to open docs at all...or just over a network.
There was a problem with OpenOffice when you use the special "kioslave" URLs like system:/ or media:/. Basically, these aren't real addresses - KDE does some behind-the-scenes trickery with them.
If you can open a .doc from /home/yourname but not (say) system:/home, then that's what the problem is; though I thought they'd fixed that...
