    Problem installing Wine on AMD64

    Hello,

I am trying to install wine on my AMD64 machine.. As there is no built-in package in the wine page, I followed there instructions for building wine from scratch... I got stuck up with an exception error

    Code:
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
    See `config.log' for more details.
    make: *** [config.status] Error 77
    Build command 'cd wine-0.9.21~winehq0~ubuntu~6.06 && dpkg-buildpackage -b -uc' failed.
    E: Child process failed
Before helping, kindly note that I have
    *re-installed build-essential
    *re-installed libc6-dev
    *
I want to use wine to run Nortel VPN client software only (If you have got a way/amd-64 Nortel package to use Nortel VPN Client without WINE, I would be the HAPPIEST person in this world)
Here is the entire output when I tried, apt-get --build source wine

    Code:
    root@poonguzhali:/bin# apt-get --build source wine

Re: Problem installing Wine on AMD64

    Hi

It won't compile, since wine is a compatibility layer for win32. But you can create a 32 bit environment and run it here. Please see here:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=97026

    Good luck!

Re: Problem installing Wine on AMD64

        Hello Milano..

Yesterday was a night mare for me .

I followed the second link which you gave that deals with installing debootstrap for a 32 bit env.

Everything went fine until i got error while installing wine on the 32 bit env. Since I noticed that i have installed gnome i386 env instead of kde (if i am familiar with), I thought I can remove gnome & install kde. And that was the disaster.. i tried

        Code:
        $rm -Rf /chroot/
to delete all gnome instances, then reboot the system.
I can see X-server starting normally with login screen but after providing the password I am getting the error,

        "Couldn't start kstartupconfig. Check Installation"
I logged into terminal & knew that kstartupconfig is a bin file. Though without any reason i re-installed kdm & xserver pkgs, i really dont know how installation/removal of a 32 bit /chroot/ env would have affected my 64 bit env.

humm.. I have not browsed the net for resuming kstartupconfig which I am going to do now... This reply is an update for you valuable help.. Any more help regarding kstartupconfig would be grateful.

P.S: I am missing Linux basics on how to play with config files, debugging etc. If you can suggest me any book/online material to learn these, I would be very happy.

        Many thanks!

                Hello Milano,

No problem @ all.. In Linux, the problem is only between the chair & the computer lol
our firm has got only windows nortel licenses..
i installed wine only for using Nortel VPN client... but Nortel disappointed me

Then to the height of surprise, one of my colleagues from Denmark (Long live!! ) suggested me to use kvpnc which has Cisco Support...

Followed.. Installed.. now kvpnc ROCKS!!!.. I am able to access my office machine & work from Linux.. HURRAHHHH.. i dont know how to praise these Linux CHAPS.. how could they do such amazing things without making a brand........GOSH.. they are the real creators..

Now after calling all of my friends (now its 12 midnight here ) to share the joy, i am composing this to APPLAUSE the KUBUNTU team.. LONG LIVEEEEEEEEEEE
