    command line package install

    Hello,
I just installed kubuntu and on my laptop. kubuntu doesn't see my pectel modem so i useing an old pcmcia 33.6kbs modem. I think it sees the hardware modem i hope. Anyway what i'm asking is how to install penggy and it library. In pclinuxos the only way to install them was thru the command line. However it seems the commands are differient with kubuntu. I've tried to install the packages but it errors out. I thnk i need root privaliages. I'm Confused

    P.S i'm a complete idiot/noobie to linux though i'm a pro at DOS
Plus i've already downloaded the penggy *.deb files for ubuntu
Once i can get penggy working I can then use Synamptic.

    Thanks,

    Re: command line package install

    Phototrek,

first things first: don't panic but, please, do yourself as well as your system a huge favour and never ever try to install packages manually - unless you know exactly what you're doing and/or your backup is up-to-date ...

Penggy is an AOL client (!) and I'm not sure if this will help solving your (modem) problem. However, there's an official version of this package lurking in the (K)Ubuntu "Universe" repositories ...

So, in order to get things going "the Debian way", fire-up package management and instruct it to install Penggy. Why? Because in doing so, the package will not only be installed properly (with all dependencies checked and cleared as necessary) but also be integrated in your system (which will prove useful in terms of updating / maintenance and the like) ... [1]

For the DOS freaks the console is where the show is going to happen (root rights provided, of course - but that's a different topic [2][3] in brief: interventions to the "core" system are root's privilege, to ordinary users merely the rights to ruin their own "home(s)" should be granted ...):

    ROOT # apt-get install penggy

Hope that helps ... otherwise: keep asking!

not sure what they mean by you shouldnt manually install...
i am a noob and i do it all the time and the dependencies are installed for me...
        I would do this...
        Code:
        sudo aptitude install penggy

My definition of manually install(ation in the relevant context goes as follows: "download a tarball, extract it, run configure , run make , run make install".
There are applications one can only install this way (in my case: VMware Workstation) - but then, it's important to realize that no one takes care of dependencies, later updates or later removal, except for the guy in front of the terminal

I hope this helps making an important concept a litte clearer. Otherwise: keep asking!

              Re: command line package install

Thanks for the help. I was able to install and configure penggy. However i have one huge problem. Kubuntu will not see either modem. I have an old 33.6kbs pcmcia modem and a 56k internal pectel modem in my Dell 6C10. PCLinuxOS is able to see the pcmcia modem but Kubuntu doen't. Is there a driver that i may download and install with out compiling. I know nothing about compiling. Plus the linux winmodem sites seem that i have to be online for the sites to detect the right modem then install the right software.

              Thanks

Once the modem is detected then i will be able to use synamptic package manager and life will be much easier.
