    Synaptic Problem

Since I had problems of freezing with adept, I installed Synaptic.
I can't open it from GUI. But the same works if I start it from CLI but with the following error msg:

(synaptic:5227): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

    (synaptic:5227): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166
    Major opcode: 144
    Minor opcode: 3
    Resource id: 0x0
    Failed to open device
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166
    Major opcode: 144
    Minor opcode: 3
    Resource id: 0x0
    Failed to open device

    Any pointers please ?

    Re: Synaptic Problem

    Varaahan,

your post looks really interesting as long as no one else exactly knows how to handle your problem(s), I would suggest two starting points in order to find out what's going wrong:

    1. The part about the "X Errors" makes me guess that your X server's configuration might not be the best;
    2. The part about the "locale(s)" makes me guess that your system's environment might not be too well set.

Have you had a look at the X server's log file, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, already? If I'm guessing right, some error messages should show up in there ... As for the system environment: have you ever encountered some sort of strange behaviour, for example getting the wrong output from typing special characters into Kedit / Kwrite or simply a Bash shell? If this is the case, you might need to reconfigure your system's environment (read: language and location specific settings): sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

    HTH

      Re: Synaptic Problem

I have no problems with X Server / locales so far.
Kubuntu was installed nicely without any hitch.

And this problem got solved automatically.

Only once I had to start it thro' cLI and now it works fine from the menu.

I have noticed this kind of error msgs whenever I try to start GUI application from CLI (not only in Kubuntu but in other distros as well).

      Thanks for your help.

Only when starting them as root (or with sudo)?
If so, does running "xhost localhost" first, help?
