I get this error when trying to install from source...

    Code:
checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.2 and < 4.0) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation!
not sure what i am suppose to install... This has happened more than once...

Re: I get this error when trying to install from source...

you need qt -dev packages in order to compile. If you install the package kdelibs4-dev, it should install just about all the related -dev packages you will need for most KDE/QT apps

I wonder if some are in Universe/multiverse? Can you paste the error you are getting?

          Code:
          Reading package lists... Done
          Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
          that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kdelibs4-dev: Depends: libavahi-client-dev (>= 0.4) but it is not going to be installed
          E: Broken packages

try running this command to fix this:
            sudo apt-get -f install,
or try installing the package mentioned (libavahi-client-dev) by itself and try again

                did you update first?
Do you have both Universe and Multiverse enabled?

Maybe post the contents of your sources.list

                    looks ok from here.

I think the bigger question I should have asked at the beginning is what specifically are you trying to compile? That would make it easier to narrow down what you need to install

                      right now, the k3bpreview2...
i installed it before so it shouldnt be a problem...
i also had this problem with a couple of other programs but their names excape me atm...

well the only thing I can suggest at the moment is to disable all the non-ubuntu repos and try again
                        basically keep anything from:
                        us.archive.ubuntu.com
                        archive.ubuntu.com
                        kubuntu.org
                        the security ones

and see if that fixes anything

Dang thats one huge sources.list! I wonder how much duplication there is with all those sources, and if there eventually will be version conflicts with so many different ones (though probably not much)

I still have little in mine that is not ubuntu-specific

I suspect that ditching the debian etch repo was the major fix for you, all the ones in your current list seem to be *buntu-specific.
