PC freezes every ten minutes for a second or two

Hi guys, I switched from SuSE 10.1 a few months ago to Dapper, I managed to get most things working, exept fot this annoying problem.

when I watch a DVD or AVI file with Mplayer, every 7-10 minutes or so the audio and video playback hangs for a second or two. after that i can continue to watch. I have the same problem when using other programs like openoffice, firefox, even the console stops accepting and displaying my keystrokes.

in Ksysguard it shows up as a spike in my cpu usage
I am pretty sure that no cronjobs get started every ten minutes

    1) what process is hogging my computer?
    2) can I write /is it hard to write a script that uses the files in /proc to determine what process is getting to 100%?
    3) can I dump, in some way, my process list (using Top or /proc) so that it can be reviewed on this forum?

IMHO I suspect Katapult and adept-notifier since both are bound to update themselves somtimes. BTW, i have not installed (or removed, i'm not sure) Beagle or another indexing program (that is, to my knowledge)

    thanks in advance!

You might be looking at hardware problems!

Your PC might be over heating!
Watching a DVD moive does work the CPU, memory and DVD drive.
Watching over one hour can raise the temperature over 20 degrees F.
The memory might have a leak.
The DVD drive could be a little dusty inside.
Are the fans working without any noise?
The list of things goes on to check.

Clean the inside of your PC. Dust inside the PC cause overheating problems and can kill the PC.

Having 512MB or more memory should stop the problem.

    Good Luck

problem is solved; it was Kwebdesktop

      thanks for your reaction!

I found the problem. i just watched the output from Top while playing an AVI file, and it was Kwebdesktop that was causing the hanging. I disabled it under the "advanced options" at "configure desktop". strange, because i have a normal PNG picture as background, not a web page... oh, well, problem is solved . Now I can at last enjoy my Kubuntu box the way it was ment!
