Hmm - if you install programs from the net happens this:

from: 3.6 Removing unused package files: apt-get clean and autoclean (http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap...n.html#s-clean)

When you install a package APT retrieves the needed files from the hosts listed in /etc/apt/sources.list, stores them in a local repository (/var/cache/apt/archives/), and then proceeds with installation

If you don't remove packages they stay in the ~/archives/ (check your settings for adept/synaptic/whatever). Copy packages from /var/cache/apt/archives/ to the 11 machines or tell other machines where to look at (do you have network between the 11 machines ?)

-h This help text.
-d Download only - do NOT install or unpack archives

Multiple packages may be selected for installation in one line. Files downloaded from the network are placed in the directory /var/cache/apt/archives for later installation.

So you don't need to install programs in the laptop, use - d option.

Thanks! This sounds exactly like what I need to do. I am not sure how to "tell the 11 machines where to look". I do have a network but how do I tell the 11 machines where to look?

Alternatively, if I copy the packages from /var/cache/apt/archives/ where would I place the packges in the 11 machines.

As part of its operation, APT uses a file that lists the 'sources' from which packages can be obtained. This file is /etc/apt/sources.list.

and

2.2 How to use APT locally

Sometimes you have lots of packages .deb that you would like to use APT to install so that the dependencies would be automatically solved.

To do that create a directory and put the .debs you want to index in it .

So you put in the sources.list where the packages are.

Something like this:

I'm assuming here that you have somekind disk which all computers can see (netdrive) and it is mounted at the /media/

Backup sources.list before you edit it !

if I copy the packages from /var/cache/apt/archives/ where would I place the packges in the 11 machines.

You copy the packages from the laptops ~/archives/ to the 11 computers /var/cache/apt/archives/.

Apt/adept/synaptic/whatever checks first ~/archives/ before it tries to download packages.

Thanks - we are making progress!
I put all the needed files from the mother machine into a directory I called /root/debs then
I modified the sources.list by adding:
deb file:/root/debs

However when I do a sudo apt-get update, I get an error on line 9 which is the added line (deb file:/root/debs). The error reads:
E: Malformed line 9 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)

I then commented out line 9 and put all the .deb files from the mother machine into the /var/cache/apt/archives directory of a daughter machine as you suggest. At this point I was able to install K-Touch (a typing tutor program that was installed in the mother machine) by using:
K Menu > Add/Remove Programs. Great! However I was not able to install Samba this way. I had copied all the .deb files in the mother machine (which had Samba installed) into the daughter machine.

Using Adept, I can see that K-Touch is installed however Samba is not. Can you suggest how to get Samba to install in a daughter machine?

I modified the sources.list by adding:
deb file:/root/debs

Should be: deb file:/root debs/ (and there is blank between root and debs).

Using Adept, I can see that K-Touch is installed however Samba is not. Can you suggest how to get Samba to install in a daughter machine?

Quick guess: Something is missing. Didn't adept mention that ?
Try: sudo apt-get install samba (or sudo apt-get -s install samba). You get info whats wrong.

OK, back again after attempting to download Samba and KTouch. By the way, when installing Kubuntu from the internet cafe here in Nepal, I get a message "cannot acccess security updates". To that message, I just respond OK.

Something is wrong in the au.archive... Broken/maintance or something else. Try later again. Or change au to something else -> us/uk... (if you are in the hurry). And remenber : Backup first !

Here you can make new sources.list easily:
Sources.list generator
http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-mati

Here you can generate an ubuntu sources.list for your preferred set of repositories. Just tick all repositories you want. The default set is selected automatically.

Thanks, I will check it out.

Apparently you figured out that I can install Ktouch using the method of transfering files to the ~/archives directory. I just cannot load Samba that way nor can I do any installs from the internet here in Nepal. Fortunately I have the machines that were configured in the US. Anyway, I will check things out.

About samba:

It should work like this (should :P ) :

-d download only
(Of course you could install samba in the laptop)

copy everything from laptop /var/cache/apt/archives/ to comp01 /var/cache/apt/archives/

Any errors in the comp01 (or comp02..11)

One problem now is that Adept says there is only ~937 available packages and the KTouch is not one of them. I have put the Kouch .deb files in ~/archives but from Adept, it is not listed - even after I do an apt-get update.

I am VERY interested in any suggestions you can make.

Tried your uk version of sources.list. Went through (synaptic says there is 18542 packages).

About 403 Forbidden errors:

When I run apt-get update, I was thrown with "403 Forbidden [IP: xx.xx.xx.xx 80]" message. It is due to HTTP stream related restriction by the corporate firewall. To solve this issue, I changed all http repositories with ftp repository in /etc/apt/sources.lst (command in vi is :1,$s/http/ftp/g). Then it worked like charm.

I followed this example as well. Instead of changing /etc/apt/sources.list I went through

System > Administration > Software Properties > (enter password) > Select Repository on left side > Choose Edit > Replace http:// with ftp:// > OK > Close > Reload.

I did this for each of the repositories I had listed and everything worked properly.

Is this a common problem? If I browse to the repository in firefox I have no problem but I can't see it in the software update manager.

Nothing is blocked going out, and there is no proxy involved.
