RAM Memory: Distro X uses 57, Kubuntu 167?

    Hello all,

Could someone explain to me why some distro X uses 57MB RAM while using latest KDE and Ubuntu/Kubuntu uses 167MB? (that is without cache and buffers already)

I'm not totally newbie-asking this, but come on, 100MB? What's the explanation? Distro X that I tested is Kurumin (a brazillian distro). It is very knoppix based, and I can't seem to miss anything that ubuntu have.

So, services, fonts, better kernel... what could account for this difference? And could I achieve such a low memory comsumption with Ubuntu/Kubuntu like this without loosing much functionalitty?

    thanks

As to a technical answer to your question ..... maybe the programmers can help you there. But my thought would be if a distro of your liking is working great for you then great!
At least for me Kubuntu has been a pretty easy system to use, maybe because of modules that are loaded, drivers, ease of use for the users etc, etc, is what is using up the 167 MB ram. With modern computers 167 MB isn't very much ram when you consider that most new computers have at least 1 GB or 512 at a minimum. For the lower hardware end users another distro might be better suited for their system. Linux comes in all flavors for everyone to choose for themselves, if they aren't happy with one of the free flavors of linux the choices are abundant. Here is an example of a distro made for lower end machines http://www.xubuntu.org/

Hope this helps in some way.

    Cheers

If you need full featured Desktop Environtment, like KDE, RAM consumption doesn't matter, IMHO.. Btw, 512 mb costs ~ $40

I'm not saying I'm not happy with Kubuntu, Its just a technical curiosity I have. I mean, where can I see how much memory is my kernel using, for instance? I ant to get to the core of this discrepancy. If kernel is the answer, I could learn/try to recompile it and use Kubuntu with a low RAM consumption.

Perhaps I should move this question to the development forum?

          Hi,

To see how much memory is using your system, you can use the command free, or vmstat or top...
About using the lowest ram possible, it will be quite hard, because of linux architecture, you're loading everything what you're doing into ram and freeing only when really needed.

For example, following to my computers, I'm always using all my ram, doing the same things, (no swap used) anyway my computers have between 768 Mb and 1 Gb or ram.

Finally recompiling the kernel would help in booting faster and taking less place on disk, not sure it will make a difference in ram...

Hope it answered to your question.
