Using period in usernames

Hi,

I'm migrating from another Linux distro to Kubuntu, and would like my users to be able to keep their existing usernames, some of which include periods.However, Kubuntu 6.06.1 appears not to allow for that. Can someone tell me how to change Kubuntu's behaviour so as to allow for usernames with periods in them?

What error do you receive. sudo useradd user.l works fine for me.

or go to kmenu -> system settings -> kuser and add user there.
