Oh XGL, why dost thou hate me?

Hey guys, i've been trying to get compiz and XGL running on my box (Dapper with fglrx) for the past few days to no avail. the first time i tried i broke KDE/X pretty damn badly and had to reinstall. My second attempt has yeilded SOME results, but not necessarily good ones. using this http://www.compiz.net/topic-205-kubu...l-compiz-howto howto over on the compiz forums, it appears I've managed to start compiz, but not XGL and further, i'm missing all windows decorations.

The biggest problem i face is that for the most part, I have no idea what i did to get to this point, that is, i have no idea what the instructions i followed mean and thus have no clue what's wrong now or how to fix it. Are there any ideas? is there a BETTER howto anywhere?

    cheers

I have not tried this yet, but this site should help. It is ubuntu/kubuntu specific:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager

I'll be attempting this over the weekend (if all goes as planned) so I'll keep my eye on the forum to help in case you have any issues (assuming I dont have any)

i got this working yesterday, the tutorial ShOcKwAvE gave above is the way to go.

it's really cool when you get it going.

make sure you install csm so you can tweak the effects

Hey again, I was just reading the Gentoo wiki on XGL and they were listing the supported hardware. My card (9800XT) was listed, but in the notes it said KDM runs slowly....what exactly does this mean I can expect?

            # Run Xgl server on :1, on top of normal X
Xgl :1 -fullscreen -ac -accel xv -accel glxbuffer &
            # Tell subsequent X programs to access the Xgl server at :1
            DISPLAY=:1
            # Start Compiz window manager
            #gnome-window-decorator &
            cgwd &
compiz gconf decoration wobbly fade minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place menu switcher &
            # Start GNOME
            exec startkde
