After dealing with a broken kde 3.5.4 I reinstalled kubuntu and tried upgrading to kde 3.5.3 this a.m. /backports rppos would not update because md5sums not matching. After adding 3.5.3 repos to sources.list and adding gpg sigs. ran adept full upgrade. it finished with errors and left me with broken dependancies. so I did apt-get -f upgrade. Machine shut down after upgrade and now I can not login to my account normally or failsafe.
This has gotten to be very frustrating as I had a perfectly good, working desktop using kde 3.5.3 before uprading to 3.5.4. and now i can't get 3.5.3 working again.
