I changed the resolution & now I can't log in.

    Hi all!

I've just installed Kubuntu 6.06 and
    -I changed the resolution screen to 1600 x 1200,
-when I clicked OK for the changes to take effect, ZAP,
    -the log in screen appeared.
    And now on
-every time I put my user name and password,
-the screen goes black during less than a second and
-the log in screen appears again,
moment from witch I can repeat the process indefinitely, the log in screen keeps appearing, now I'm writing from within windows.

    Try this:

    1. Press Control-Alt-F1 to get to a terminal

    2. Log in.

    3. Type
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    4. Answer the questions as best you can. Choose the defaults for questions you don't know the answer to.

    5.
    Code:
    exit
    6. Press Control-Alt-F7 to get back to graphical mode

    7. Press Control-Alt-Backspace to reset the graphical X server

    8. Log in again.

      I have tried this.

The step 3 starts a wizard wich tries to identify the correct configuration for x. This wizard, in my case, can't find any good configuration so it asks me for each parameter to configure, it scares me a litle and now I'm re-installing Kubuntu (yes rigth now while writing this in the same machine where the instalation is runnig, the linux word is wonderfull).

It is rare because the installation detects this hardware very good and it work's great ones finished the installation,
I can't put the resolution to 1600 x 1200, but it is good too, I was just trying, I don't want the resolution to be at 1600x1200.

Any way, I feel glad for you to take the time to anwer me. Thanks a lot. If there is any thing I can do for any of you... I'm here

      Thanks

Happened to me a few days ago.

Here is how I was helped to dig myself out of the mess. Starting point is to reboot, start in recovery mode, and then type startx. The resulting error message will tell you where it has gone wrong.
