kpdf won't automatically open pdf file

I am having trouble getting "kpdf" to automatically open when I select a pdf file from the net with Firefox (1.5.0.5)
In Preferences I go to "Downloads" - "Download Actions" - "View & Edit Actions". In the "Download Actions" window I find under Extensions -"PDF", File Type - "PDF file", Action - "Open with (and nothing else here).
When I go to "Change Action" window how and what do I enter, (I am assuming the first option "Open them with the default application") in this space is the correct one.? At present this is selected yet there is no text in this pane.
I am also wondering if the same would apply for "Thunderbird" as I have the same issue there.
If anyone can help me with this that would be greatly appreciated.

When you try to open a pdf file, firefox will open a window that says "Open With" or similar, browse to /usr/bin/kpdf and then select "always use this program when opening files of this type". I don't use T-bird so I can't answer that part of your question.

I didn't get the window that you suggested. What I get is the download manager window, and once the download is done nothing happens.
I have selected in my home directory the Download file as the place that all my downloads go to. As you suggested I have selected the /usr/bin/kpdf, yet it still doesn't automatically open.
      Am I missing something here.?

For firefox, try getting the pdf download extension from Mozilla, which should help you.

With T'Bird if you right click on the attached file and select open, you will get the options box, choices should stick.

OK, I got the download extension (PDF Download 0.7.4) and restared FF, still doesn't work. I can get to the window that gives me the options - Download it, Open PDF, View as HTML, Cancel. When I select Open PDF, this is what I get, "Unexpected error: contact the author". Also if I look in the Preferences under Advanced - Update - "Automatically check for updates to: (then the options) Firefox, Installed extensions and themes., Search Engines. I can't select "Firefox" yet I can select the others. However if I check the "Show update history" even though I just downloaded the extension mentioned, it states that no updates installed yet. So how do I get Firefox selected again for automatic updates.? Maybe this is part of my problem. I am really stumped now.
As for Tbird got that setup thanks.

Ah! There does appear to be a problem with Firefox, or more correctly the Kubuntu implementation of it. For example, I believe that the "update firefox" option will be greyed out as if it were able to update directly from the Mozilla site it would probably mess up the installation.

I have just tried to select a pdf on the internet and, as you have found, it doesn't seem to work.

Have you tried Acrobat instead of kpdf?

Yes I have, and I was trying to avoid using proprietary software.

I don't actually think it matters. There is this odd behaviour with pdfs on my system. It seems necessary for me to save them prior to opening. Somewhat perversely I have no problem with opening an MS Word document straight off the web!

I have to agree with your assesment, I also have no problem with MS W. opening the pdf document straight off the web!. Also in Konqueror it automatically opens pdf files in another tab. That is why I was asking the question in the first place, because I thought that I could do the same with FF. Guess not.!!

Re: kpdf won't automatically open pdf file

The update of firefox is done via repository. That's why the update option is grayed out.
For the pdf files, try to go Edit > Preferences > Downloads > Download Actions > View & Edit Actions
If you find the action for pdf file, remove it.
Then when you try to open a pdf file from the web, when the dialog window appears, select "Open with" and OK. Don't care the "browse" button.
Doing this I open the pdf with kpdf. Try It

OK I did as you suggested and all I get is the pdf downloads to my /home/download folder. The dialog window does not open at all. So how can I fix that little problem.?
                          Many thanks.

I don't really know why the dialog window doesn't appear after deleting the voice pdf in the "View & Edit Actions" tab

You could try to create a new profile and see if the problen persist....
