quick package question

To make a long story short I want to remove a package but because of broken packages I also have to remove Kubuntu-Desktop. I assume that means removing KDE, right.

Anyway what is Kubuntu Desktop and what happens when I remove it? Also what happens if I re-install it?

I see that this thread has views, but no answers. I did a google, and if you uninstall that, you are farked for a GUI. However, what I would do is this.

Research the command line commands to install Kubuntu Desktop.. Uninstall it, and boot into the recovery kernel. Follow your notes, and KDE should be back.

Kubuntu-desktop is a meta-package (it depends on all packages that are installed on the default kubuntu installation). This means if you uninstall a default package, kubuntu-desktop will get removed.

That usually isn't a big deal, as a meta-package it doesn't remove any of the actual packages if it's removed.

Only downside of not having kubuntu-desktop installed is that when new software is added to the kubuntu default installation (usually happens when a new version is released), the new software might not be installed automatically. So even though it's quite safe to remove kubuntu-desktop, it's usually a good idea to reinstall it before doing a dist-upgrade to a new release (like from breezy to dapper). Alternatively you can periodically check what packages would be installed if you'd install kubuntu-desktop, and choose to install the new packages you want.

Rather cryptic again, but perhaps you catched my point, if not, I'll be happy to (try to) clarify
