Portuguese accents

Hi guys.

Hope you can help me.

When i open a text file from the windows world i don't get the portuguese letters correctly.
It happens with all kind of text files.
I attached two png's so you can see with you own eyes.
Both the attachements are from a .srt file. Needless to say that i can hardly watch a video on xine or kmplayer.

It seems to be okay after this change to /etc/enviroment

LANG="iso8859-15"
#LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en_US:en"

Is this the correct fix?

is there a problem with utf8 in ubuntu?

i've allways used slackware and didn't have this problem before.

Another clue.

It only happens in KDE/Xorg, it must be a disconfiguration somewhere in kde.

If i login in text mode without kde runnning i can see all the right chars with
utf mode in /etc/enviroment

Is this a bug?

It only displays correctly  in vi(m) editor 
if i do $cat <file> or $less <file> it don't display correctly.

i tested with the desktop install in qemu and it happens the same even after instalation. In slackware under the same qemu it displays correctly.
In slackware the LANG export is "en_us"

is there a better place to submit this. I've been using ubuntu only for a week, and i don't seem to get a single answer around here

For me (I'm russian)
this works fine:
LANG="ru_RU.KOI8-R"
LANGUAGE="ru_RU:ru:en_GB:en"

Is iso8859-15 okey?

And, I think you should set LANG and LANGUAGE to one language...
May be I'm wrong

Hi tribunal, thanks for replying.

Tell me something, are you using Kde and the rest in Russian native language or in English?

I'm using English language in all the programs (System, KDE, etc), but when i change LANG to ISO8859-1(5) i can read the files but then i start to
have problems with the locale, eg:Perl and debconf like the output that i've pasted before.
I'm starting to think that it must be a bug with kubuntu, beause on vi i can edit all the files that come from windows, but only on VI(M).

All programs are in russian here, including KDE
There are several problems: some applications are still trying to use UTF-8 instead of KOI-8
Event after installing all language packages (there are 2 common language packages in Kubuntu, as I remember and language packages for KDE, OOo and so on)

Hi.

It seems that i will have to live with that.
Nevertheless is strange because i've been using slackware four the last 4 years and i never did have this problem before.

I have seem that if i change the default $LANG to iso8859-1(5) everything displays well but some things get broken with perl and debconf. So the solution is before i update or install some package i do a export  LANG="en_US.UTF-8.
As a final example this is a file that is on a server here at my work place on a windows 2k3 server. This file was exported by myself with slackware linux current two weeks ago.

In russian I can seen only rectangles instead of letters
That is why Mandriva is still alive
It is not so good in packages or hardware, but it has over 60 languages out from the box without a problem

Maybe someone with inside knowledge of debian or ubuntu will see this post
and have a brighter solution

In russian, tribunal is a court (very cruel, usually) in army
The decision usually is "Kill them ALL!"
