Kaffeine, totem, etc crash and no way to play a dvd

    Hello,

I'm still unable to play a single dvd under Dapper 6.06.1.
I've of course installed all codecs and relates libs.

Here is what kaffeine says the first time it's launched (by the user from the kde menu or by root kdesu from a konsole) and then crashes all the time.

    Kaffeine Part...
    Ok.
    KDE...
    Found version: 3.5.4
    Ok.WIN32 Codecs...
    Ok.
    libdvdcss...
    Ok.
    DVD Drive...
Can't check DMA mode. Permission denied or no such device: "/dev/dvd".
    DVB-Device...
No DVB-Devices found. The DVB related functions will be hidden.
    Distribution...
    Ok.
    RESULT: All ok!

    Totem says:
The Application "totem" has quit unexpectedly.
You can inform the developers of what happened to help them fix it. Or you can restart the application right now.

Any help will very much appreciated.
    Cheers.

    try

    Code:
    sudo Kaffeine
and see if that works. If it does, it's a permission problem.

      No it doesn't.

Here is the output of "sudo kaffeine":
      XInitThreads()
[INFO] If Kaffeine hangs here run 'configure --with-xinit-workaround' and recompile/reinstall.
ERROR: Communication problem with kaffeine, it probably crashed.

      cheers.

        try

        Code:
        kaffeine --wizard
and see what the output gives you.

Re: Kaffeine, totem, etc crash and no way to play a dvd

The output is too long for pasting here and is attached as kaffeine.log.
          cheers.

running kaffeine --wizard launches kaffeine with the same message as in my initial post. Then I try to play the dvd inserted and this issues many other messages included in the file attached.

(well I see in the preview of my reply that the file isn't attached, and so its content is included below: "user" is me):

Re: Kaffeine, totem, etc crash and no way to play a dvd

I'm sorry but I'm just offerring troubleshooting steps here, as I can't tell what the problem is. Historically, I've installed all of this stuff by hand, and I generally run into trouble. With Dapper I used Automatix (or EasyUbuntu) to get multimedia up, and I haven't had a problem. So, one thing I suggest is reinstalling via Automatix or EasyUbuntu.

It does seem that Kaffeine is having trouble opening the DVD. I would try an older DVD as some of the newer encryption methods cannot be circumvented w/ the latest libdvdcss. If that's the case, I've found opening the dvd through the file menu-browse to the VIDEO_TS folder, and opening that will start the dvd. Another option is to install VLC +/- MPlayer , and see if that works; again, w/ VLC browse to the VIDEO_TS subfolder.

One thing that's peculiar is the mention of Samba in the log file. Do you have Samba installed?

Re: Kaffeine, totem, etc crash and no way to play a dvd

              Thanks for your suggestions.
I had tried to open VIDEO_TS using kaffeine as you suggested but in vain. Now I've tried with vlc, and the same result.

              i) The dvds I'm trying to play do work on other computers and under windows.
ii) I've installed the codecs and the related libraries via automatix for kubuntu.
iii) I'm sure I haven't installed samba, but I do see that the package samba-common is installed but not the package samba!!

My feeling is that I have a problem with the mounting of /dev/dvd cause I see that kaffeine tries to access it. When the dvd is inserted and I select "open" with konqueror, what I see is media:/scd0, but browsing, say from my home dir, I have to go to /media/cdrom0. I suspect this is related to the fact that on this laptop the SCSI-devices system is used but I don't have a clue...

              Cheers.
