    compiz with KDE crashes

Well, I have installed this a thousand times before and never had an issue with it, but for some reason, today, I reinstalled my system and installed XGL and compiz as per the wiki and I can start XGL and it, in turn, starts KDE. However, when I try to start compiz, the screen flickers, and then a blank blue screen, then back to the login screen.

Are there issues with the latest version of compiz? I have also tried the vanilla version too without luck.

    Thanks!!!

    Joe

I don't know what to tell you other than the best place to seek an answer for this particular problem would be over at www.compiz.net. All they do over there is compiz support, and I've had some success getting answers there in the past.

Remember to post your system details, like video card, driver version, processor, and whether or not you're using Kubuntu for AMD64, etc.

Thanks for the response... I found a slew of other forum posts where people are having similar problems as I am. Apparently, this is a wide spread issue with Compiz and not *ubuntu spicific, so I will just wait for those in the know to fix and release an update.

      Thanks again!!!

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl
Have you tried that yet? I have XGL/Compiz running smooth. My only complaint is that Shift + Backspace restarts X. I haven't dug around enough to find out how to rem it out yet. It's really irritating though hahah.

Yeah, that was all part of the install process on the wiki site.

          Thanks for the responce...

Which wiki are you using for this? How are you trying to run compiz? I downloaded a debian based shell script to install xgl/compiz, and it just asks what brand gpu, which desktop and then you're good to go. End session, re-login with Xgl, and then I open up gconf-editor or cgwd themer and I'm good to go. I tried going through a HOW-TO someone had posted on the compiz.net forums, but I couldn't get it to work.

BTW, this is a eVGA 7900GT Signature Series card with nVidia's latest drivers.

Oh, if you have a script that will do it all for me, thats even better

BTW, I used these instructions to install:

              https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/Xgl

              I have an AMD X2 4400, 2 gigs ram, and a GeForce 7900 GTX (256)

              Thanks!!!

                Re: compiz with KDE crashes

                Hi,

The script to download is here: http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=43320 There is a lot to this download, however, if you just want Xgl/Compiz type:
                Code:
                sudo ./xgl.sh
I do recommend having the latest nVidia drivers and OpenGL enabled, otherwise X will crash.
