    tbird and ffox install- NOT

I have followed every set of instructions I can find, and cannot get either tbird or ffox to install and run.  What's the trick?

    as it says:

    :~$ sudo apt-get install firefox
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
    that package should be filed.
The following information may help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
firefox: Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>= 1.9.0) but it is not installable
Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.8.0) but it is not going to be installed
    E: Broken packages

    :~$ sudo apt-get install mozilla-firefox

      Try this.

      1.
      Code:
      sudo apt-get -f install
      2. Follow these instructions to get a fresh sources.list--do not add to your current list. Make sure you replace it.
      http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

      3. Then do
      Code:
      sudo aptitude update
      sudo aptitude install firefox mozilla-thunderbird

        from http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

        If you're using Kubuntu (KDE):
        sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup
        kdesu kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list

is this all one command, or two separate ones?

          following your instructions:

          :~$ sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup

it just flashes back to the prompt

I now have sources.list open in a KWrite window which says:

            bulling right along (I can always format and re-install . . .)

your instructions seem to have worked just fine!

So now my question is "WHY?"
what was 'wrong' that all of that needed to be done?

Looks as if you figured everything out yourself.

What was wrong? Do you see all those # signs in your original sources.list?

The # sign at the beginning of a line basically says "Ignore the rest of this line." For all practical purposes, that line isn't there. It's called "commenting out" a line.

How it got that way--that I don't know.

Most likely because the installer couldn't connect to the repositories when you installed (perhaps your network wasn't connected?)

                  Notice all those
