    Re: GUI

there are several different things that control the "GUI":

are you looking to change the background (image behind all the icons)? to do this, just right click on the actual background and select "configure desktop". in thie background tab, you can select a background picture from one of the defaults or one of your own pics.

are you talking about the look of all the windows, menus, colors and all? you can change the "theme" of your GUI using a variety of tools (check out http://www.kde-look.org for tons of ideas/downloads). to change some of the settings using the preinstalled color/look options, go to k-menu-> system settings. personal section-> appearance. from here, you can change tons of the settings related to the look of your GUI...from icons to menu colors to "themes"...the possibilitites are almost endless...or something.

are you looking to change the look of the "start menu" (K-menu in KDE) and the other visual pieces of the operating system (kubuntu runs the "desktop environment" KDE whereas ubuntu runs the Gnome desktop environment. most of the major apps in the "GUI" are associated with the desktop environment that comes with each distro)? to change your desktop environment, you can just go into adept (k menu-> system-> adept) and select the "gdm" package (gnome desktop manager). this will install the gnome DE on top of your kubuntu install which will leave quite a messy overlap of applications and libs. a cleaner way to go about this would be to use a fresh ubuntu dapper drake install CD. the cd is a great option because you can use the live CD functionality to test out Gnome for awhile before installing or choosing to keep KDE.

anyways...if that didnt get you close to where you were looking to go...post. or you can just post because your happy
