root w/o password

When I boot in recovery mode (from grub) I get logged on as root without having to enter a password.

How can I prevent that? Can I give a password to root and still use sudo?

Yes. To add a password for the root account, open a konsole and type
sudo passwd root.

Realize, though, that anyone who has a little know-how and physical access to your computer pretty much has root access anyway.

Understood. There is no one (at least, no one I mistrust) who has access to my system, and no one in my acquaintance who has Linux expertise. They'd be lucky to find the start menu, let alone cause any harm.

In my situation, the only scenario that makes sense is to login to a personal account that requires the use of sudo for root-priviledged tasks. This reminds me that I'm doing something important, and that I should proceed with caution. But, that is the only real security I need.
