    kernel panic

i'm trying to start my pc with kubuntu 6.06 from a start-up cd( so that i don't have to install it yet) but when i start kubuntu it gives the message:

    uncompressing linux......ok, booting the kernel
    (4294669.771000) crc error
(4294669.773000) kernel panic - not syncing: vfs: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (1,0)
(4294669.773000) _ and then the underscore flicks

Boot from the Kubuntu CD and select the option Check CD for defects.
A defective CD is probably the cause of your problem.

my IBM Thinkpad does the same thing. It has Windows XP Pro and works fine. When I try to run kubuntu from the cd, it gives me the same error, even when i run "check cd for errors". But the disk runs fine on my desktop pc. My Thinkpad is a PII 366mhz, 30gb hd, 192mb ram.
