    Please somebody help me.

I am having problems. When I first installed Kubuntu everything was working fine. To make the story short I had to reinstall the OS and now the Synaptic package is not working. I try to go to the add/remove program, I could see it but it is not letting me to select it on the check box for download. I do not understand this, on the first installation was working fine but now is far from it.

I received 5 Kubuntu CDs and tried to installed one by one, to see if there was an error from the CD. but still I could not install it. I am having the same problem with "software property" I see it but is not letting me download it. When I place the Live CD in the Computer and run the add/remove program I can see the "synaptic package and software property" for down load. When the CD is finally install I can not find those packages any more.

Please help, somebody. I really want this distro to work for me.

    Thanks.

Please post the following (make sure synaptic is closed):

    1. The contents of /etc/apt/sources.list
    2. The output of the following command: sudo apt-get update

Thanks for helping me.  I just need it to down load or make the upgrade and everything else began to work just fine. Like you said, I just need it to update my computer.  Now I am very happy

I see the question and then I see the thank you. But I do not see the solution. I am experiencing what appears to be the same problem.

What do I need to do?

Uncomment (take out the # sign) on the lines that begin with "# deb".

                Re: Please somebody help me.

Just to expand on what rocketman768 wrote (not sure of your level of expertise):-

                kdesu kwrite /etc/apt/ sources.list

Remove # signs as per last post (you can leave the ones in front of deb-src if you like, these are for source codes if you want to play with those things, you don't need them for normal operations) and save.

                sudo apt-get update

                sudo apt-get upgrade

                And Awaaaaaay you go.

                Hope this helps

                Cheers

                  Re: Please somebody help me.

It works! Thank you so much

I am new to kubuntu (obviously).

Notes on following "LOWEY" supplied information

                  (1) kwrite did not find the file correctly so I had to play around until I could get to "root" and then followed the path to the sources.list

                  (2) when I ran the "sudo apt-get" commands (not sure which one) I received an error ... I had ADEPT running so had to take it down and as indicated "AWAY YOU GO".

                  -----
It has been quite awhile getting to this point.
It would not have been possible without your help!
                  -----

I actually tried installing kmahjongg and it is running now.

I actually reinstalled KUBUNTU tonight thinking that it might fix the problem but it did not. During the install it displayed an error "cannot access security updates". Would this be related to the problem?

Once again. THANK YOU. It is great to have the ability to install the programs.

Now if anyone knows of a kubuntu version of a stompbox for guitar or a recording studio software (multitrack) that would be really nice for me.

Really pleased it worked for you. You can also enable and disable repositories in Adept using Manage Repositories. Just right click on desired line to enable or disable and then apply and awaay... you know.

Here is an excellent site, written by aysiu, one of the forums more knowledgeable and helpful people. It gives good, simple explanations on how to do all sorts of things:-

May help you get going with some other things you might have trouble with.
