Since wiping my 64-bit install and reinstalling the i386 version, I just now got around to trying Google Earth again. I was reminded that I needed to upgrade the driver for my ATI card to the fglxr version (which also allows the GL screensavers to run as they should).
I got the new driver installed OK, and Google Earth runs very smoothly... until it hangs! This happens at different times, but it locks the system up tight. The cursor won't move, and keypresses have no effect. I have to switch off the power to get back control (no reset switch on these darn new machines).
I didn't try running Google Earth for any length of time before I upgraded the video driver, since GE runs so jerkily with the ati driver. So I don't know if the fglxr driver is to blame or not.
This is a big disappointment.
